How to Tune to B Standard?
Let's get loooow with B Standard. A popular tuning for rock and hard rock songs. Here's how to tune to B standard and play your heart away.
Step-by-Step: Tuning Down to B Standard
To get there, you’ll be lowering each string by two and a half steps (or five half steps). Here’s what each string will become:
- E (6th string) → B
- A (5th string) → E
- D (4th string) → A
- G (3rd string) → D
- B (2nd string) → F#
- E (1st string) → B

1. Start with the low E string (6th string)
- Slowly tune it down to B. You can use a tuner or match it to a reference note.
2. Tune the A string (5th string) down to E
- Pluck the string and lower the pitch until it matches an E.
3. Tune the D string (4th string) down to A
- This should be an octave lower than your 5th string when fretted at the 12th fret.
4. Tune the G string (3rd string) down to D
- Make sure it rings clearly without buzzing.
5. Tune the B string (2nd string) down to F#
- This one can be tricky—double-check it with a tuner.
6. Finally, tune the high E string (1st string) down to B
- It should match the 7th fret harmonic of the low B string.
Or use a The Drop pedal (or a similar one):
This is what I personally do. It makes it a hell of a lot easier to play different tunings. Here's how to do this using this pedal:
- Activate The Drop pedal and turn the knob to the 4th position.
This will drop all your strings by four half-steps (two whole steps).
With The Drop pedal, you can quickly switch back to standard tuning without retuning your strings manually!
