How to Tune to Drop D?

Ah, Drop D. The easiest way to get that thick sound. And it's easy as pie to get too. Here's how to tune to Drop D:

  1. Start by tuning your guitar to standard tuning (EADGBE). This is the usual tuning most guitars come in, and most songs are in.
  2. Tune your low E string down to D. To do this, you need to lower the pitch of the low E string by one whole step. You can use a tuner or match it to the D string (4th string) but one octave lower.
    • Once you’ve done this, your strings will be tuned to DADGBE.

The rest of your strings (A, D, G, B, E) stay the same as in standard tuning. Now you’re in Drop D, which is perfect for power chords and heavier styles of music! If you ever want to return to standard tuning, just tune the low D string back up to E.

Easy easy! Now you can play that hard rock just barring the bottom 3 strings and off you go.
